The Bush administration continues to press for
a war on Iraq, bullying members of the United Nations even as
it threatens to go forward alone. A significant percent of
Americans and all our allies agree: a unilateral strike
against Baghdad is both unwarranted and potentially
disastrous.
This content file offers readers breaking news,
the best analysis, activism resources, and timely information
they need to resist this precipitous rush to war. Questions?

The mother of all propaganda wars Mark Lawson at
the Guardian
notes that the generals are already leading the journalists
for a merry dance -- a la Norman Schwartzkopf -- tricking them
into spreading misinformation that serves their needs. The
most recent example: the report that Saddam's men dressed in
U.S. and British military uniforms will massacre their own
civilians. Posted on http://www.alternet.org/waroniraq/2003/03/000456.html.
Turkish army enters Kurdistan In a move designed
to infuriate the Pentagon, Turkey has begun
sending troops across the border into Iraqi Kurdistan. While
there are only 1000 troops at the moment and 5000 more on the
way, it may open the door to a "war within a war" between the
Turks as Kurdish fighters. Posted on http://www.alternet.org/waroniraq/2003/03/000455.html.
George Bush's bad hair day BBC has been forced to
apologize
profusely for airing footage of Dubya getting his hair primped
just minutes before he announced the decision to go to war on
Wednesday night. You can see a very short version of this
controversial feed at the Smoking
Gun website. Posted on http://www.alternet.org/waroniraq/2003/03/000454.html.
Operation Loss of Liberty This has paved the way
for "Operation Liberty Shield," the immigration sweep
featuring mass arrests for often minor immigration violations
and "voluntary interviews" with as many as 11,000 Iraqis
across the country, whether or not they are here legally. In
just one state, Colorado, the Feds are moving today to arrest
50 Iraqis, a tenth of the state's Iraqi population, and to
interview another 150, the Denver
Post reports.
"The country is at war. That's
really the bottom line here," said Bill Strassberger, a
spokesman for the Department of Homeland Security, explaining
nothing. Posted on http://www.alternet.org/waroniraq/2003/03/000453.html.
While we were sleeping... According to USA Today,
the FBI has been
granted the authority from Attorney General John Ashcroft
to arrest people on immigration charges if they are believed
to pose a wartime threat. (Previously it was only INS and
customs agents who could do this.) Typically for the Bush
gang, this increase in police powers was not made public but
rather was "confirmed Wednesday by two law enforcement
officials who spoke on condition of anonymity." Posted on http://www.alternet.org/waroniraq/2003/03/000452.html.
Different strokes Protest
photos on Yahoo! show the amazing diversity of
demonstrations happening around the world and around the
clock, from violent clashes in Egypt to ghostly vigils in D.C.
In San Franciso, where for two days the downtown canyons have
been full of protestor-police standoffs, cranky motorists,
neat lines of b&w cop Harleys, wailing fire engines and
hovering helicopters, some crafty critics have quietly pasted
fake headlines on the local daily newspaper in boxes
throughout the financial district: "Bush Murders Thousands --
Apathetic America Does Nothing." "Bush Declares Himself
Emperor." "Bush to Iraq: I Must Kill to Satisfy Satan."

United to Win Without War will initiate a speaking tour of
college campuses to help build and sustain opposition to the
war. Many actors associated with the group will wear "Peace

Julianne Moore. Posted on http://www.alternet.org/waroniraq/2003/03/000449.html.
"Shock and Awe" has begun The BBC reports
that cruise missiles and precision bombs are raining down on
Baghdad and other major cities. According to the Pentagon,
several hundred targets will be hit in the coming hours.
Reuters correspondent Khaled Oweis says,
"The earth is literally shaking in Baghdad." Posted on http://www.alternet.org/waroniraq/2003/03/000448.html.

unnecessary and immoral. Under such circumstances the only way

Chicagoans March Yesterday 4,000 protesters
including activists from Chicagoans Against
War on Iraq peacefully gathered at Federal Plaza to
express outrage over the war. But when the group shut down the
Lake Shore thoroughfare things got a bit messy when police
cornered protesters on Chicgago Ave. and arrested
hundreds of them on charges that few were informed of.

SF protests turning ugly
![sf cop]() There
have been several huge, mostly peaceful protests in San
Francisco over the last six weeks. But the mood has changed
since the bombs started falling in Baghdad, with the
protesters' tactics growing more extreme
and the cop's reactions getting more harsh. Yesterday Lisa
Rein videotaped a cop hitting
a passerby with a baton. Her video
interview (4mb .mov) with the 17-year old girl is
chilling. Posted on http://www.alternet.org/waroniraq/2003/03/000445.html.
A weekend of protests The antiwar movement is
just getting started. More than 1500 people were arrested
from Washington to San Francisco while students staged a
walk-out on 200 campuses across the nation yesterday. At least
100 protests are planned for Friday and Saturday, says the Win
Without War coalition. They
include nonviolent civil disobedience actions planned by the
Iraq Pledge of Resistance in 11 cities. Posted on http://www.alternet.org/waroniraq/2003/03/000444.html.

Here
is Richard Perle, the chair of the Defense Policy Board
and the singlemost important influence on Dubya's foreign
policy, on the U.N.: "Saddam Hussein's reign of terror is
about to end. He will go quickly, but not alone: in a parting
irony, he will take the UN down with him. Well, not the whole
UN. The 'good works' part will survive, the low-risk
peacekeeping bureaucracies will remain, the chatterbox on the
Hudson will continue to bleat." Posted

World Wide March Exceeds 200 Million
Has it come to this? ActForChange.com has an
email action asking the White House not to use tactical
nuclear weapons against Iraq. Meanwhile, at least one cultural
critic, the inimitable
Heather Havrilesky, thinks the media is showing signs of
being disappointed by the "slow" start to the war: "You can
almost hear them muttering to each other behind the scenes,
'Where's the shock and awe? We were promised shock and awe,
damn it!'" Posted on http://www.alternet.org/waroniraq/2003/03/000441.html
